Force Field for Good
You don’t know why she said it. It almost made you cry,
but then you didn’t let it, instead you asked her why.
She told you she was so sad, about something at home. It made you feel just so bad, that she was all alone.
Come help weave
a Force Field for Good,
pack up all of your fears.
We’ll thread the warp with kindness, the weft makes hate disappear.
Over and under and over
love stories we
weave from our past,
the Force Field melts all the meanness.
Justice and goodness will last.
He hit you at the park
and spoke to you with hate but something in your heart told you just to wait.
You told it to your teacher.
She spoke to him that day.
He was not some mean creature. His dog had run away.
Come help weave
a Force Field for Good,
pack up all of your fears.
We’ll thread the warp with kindness, the weft makes hate disappear.
Over and under and over
love stories we weave from our past, the Force Field melts all the meanness.
Justice and goodness will last.
Learn to talk it out. Learn to make it right. Stories are the tunnel but people are the light. When we look beneath, nothing is the same.
We protect each other
when we share all of the pain.
Our world is in great trouble.
It yearns for a new lift.
Our problems all have doubled. Our minds need a new shift. We need to tell our stories
and listen with our hearts, then we will find new glory, and never be apart.
Come help weave
a Force Field for Good,
pack up all of your fears.
We’ll thread the warp
with kindness.
The weft makes hate disappear. Over and under and over,
love stories we weave from our past, the Force Field melts
all the meanness.
Justice and goodness will last.
Learn to talk it out. Learn to make it right. Stories are the tunnel but people are the light. When we look beneath, nothing is the same.
We protect each other when we share all of the pain.

Know Your Higher Self
03:05
|
|||
I was standing by the school door waiting for the bell,
when Roger pushed me over,
so hard I fell.
I wanted just to punch him
and make him feel my hurt,
but something deep inside of me, sounded the alert.
Know your Higher Self, take it off the shelf, give it room to play every single day. Forget about the fight, reach for what is right.
You can teach yourself to fly, when you want to cry.
One day in the lunchroom
some friends were laughing loud, about the newest student
and they formed a crowd.
I started laughing with them, then I saw how sad he looked. I turned to him, said hello, then picked up all his books.
Know your Higher Self, take it off the shelf, give it room to play every single day. Forget about the fight, reach for what is right.
You can teach yourself to fly, when you want to cry.
Sometimes I don’t behave,
the best way that I can, sometimes I’m afraid,
to lend a helping hand,
but then a little voice comes from somewhere deep inside and tells me that the best in me doesn’t have to hide
Know your Higher Self, take it off the shelf, give it room to play every single day. Forget about the fight, reach for what is right.
One day I hope the world
will listen to this song
and all the leaders think about what’s right and wrong.
They’ll sit there at a table and talk about their fears, without the endless battles rumbling on for years.
Know your Higher Self, take it off the shelf, give it room to play every single day. Forget about the fight, reach for what is right.
You can teach yourself to fly, when you want to cry
You can teach yourself to fly, when you want to cry.

The Big Bad Bully Bus
03:02
|
|||
The Big Bad Bully Bus is
rolling into town.
It comes to pick you up
but it often lets you down.
Those big kids in the back
they’re making quite a fuss.
How will you survive
The Big Bad Bully Bus?
Drivers up front
he’s lookin’ at the road.
63 kids is a pretty heavy load.
No time to look back,
No time to supervise.
Those big kids in the back are
telling nasty lies.
What will you do?
What will you say
when all the bullies
come your way?
They start to call you names
they laugh right in your face,
spitballs start to fly,
they make fun of your race.
They make you want to cry.
They make you want to scream,
but if you hit ‘em back,
you join the bully team.
We become the choices
we make and if you take the high road
things will be ok.
To be a better person
we all must learn to trust.
Each of us must take the wheel
of our own bad bully bus.
Talk to an adult
when you get to school.
Ask a bully why
or tell him that’s not cool.
Learn to walk away
or stand up for a friend.
5 ways that defeat a bully in the end.
We must be strong.
We must be brave
when all the bullies
come our way!
The Big Bad Bully Bus
is rollin’ into town.
It comes to pick you up
don’t let it put you down.
Those big kids in the back they’re
making quite a fuss.
But you and I are driving the
Big Bad Bully Bus.
You and I
are driving the
Big Bad Bully Bus.

Ode to Other
words and music by Barry Lane
A song in 2 voices
Without Black
No white
Without Day
No night
Without sad
No glad
Without good
No bad
Without time
No late
Without love
No hate
Without tears
No joy
Without girls
No boys
You begin where I end and that’s why I call you my friend. We may be as different as the land and the sea, but you belong with me.
Without where
No why
Without clouds
No sky
Without know
No rope
Without Fear
No hope
Without stay
No go
Without fast
No slow
Without green
No blue
Without me
No you
You begin, where I end and that’s why I call you my friend. We may be as different as the land and the sea, but you belong with me.
We don’t know where we’re going to. We don’t know where we’ve been. Don’t believe in the differences. Learn to make amends.
Without white
no black
Without front
no back
Without one
no two
Without old
no new
Without sun
no earth
Without Death
no birth
Without stars
no space
Without smile
no face
You begin, where I end
and that’s why I call you my friend.
We may be as different as the land and the sea, but you belong with me.
We may be as different as the land and the sea, but you belong with me.

The Gimme Blues
03:48
|
|||
My Momma takes me shopping
almost every day.
She buys me lots of pizza,
and games for me to play.
I really, really like it
when I get all these toys,
but you’d think I would have
learned by now how just to enjoy.
It’s a kind of twisted feeling
that cuts right to the bone.
Why am I so sad,
and why do I feel so alone.
I got the Gimmes,
I got the Gimmes,
I got the Gimmes,
I got the Gimmes.
You’d think that I’d be happy
that I have all this stuff
but I never, never, really know
when I’ve had quite enough
I got the Gimmes.
I got the Gimmes.
Mother earth is wonderful,
she gives us all her soul.
We use it to make tools and toys
to help us to control.
Plastic, metal, steel and string
create our modern world,
but we think she has an endless
stream of stuff to just unfurl.
When will learn to realize
we have this bad disease,
and stop destroying
forests so we can see the trees. We got the Gimmes.
We got the Gimmes.
We got the Gimmes.
We got the Gimmes.
You’d think that we’d be happy
that we have all this stuff,
but we never, never really know
when we’ve had quite enough,
We got the Gimmes.
We got the Gimmes.
Doctor, Doctor, Doctor,
help us, help us, please.
Do you have a cure for
our sad selfish disease?
He says we should
think grateful thoughts
for everyone we know
and learn to love with all our hearts
to make this new world grow.
Think of them before yourself
and listen to their needs.
Find the flower in your heart
that grows among the weeds,
and lose the Gimmes,
and lose the Gimmes,
and lose the Gimmes,
and lose the Gimmes.
Think of them before yourself
and listen to their needs,
find the flower in your heart
that grows among the weeds.
And lose the Gimmes.
And lose the Gimmes.
And lose the Gimmes

Dream Anthem
00:51
|
|||
Listen to the dreams that call to you
when you're on your own.
Dreams will take your hand and lift you up
when you feel alone
Dreams will know and tell the truth
You will nod and smile
Listen to the dreams that call your name
Listen for a whille
Some may try to still your smile
Some will point and laugh.
Dreams will be the stars in your sky heart,
let them light your path.

Magic Mirror
02:08
|
|||
I’ve got a magic mirror,
I use it every day.
It makes the world much clearer,
it helps me find my way.
I’ve got a magic mirror,
you can use it too,
when you look at it
you’ll see the good in you.
I’ve got a magic mirror
I keep it in my heart.
It brings us all much nearer,
no one is apart.
I’ve got a magic mirror,
you can use it too,
when you look at me
you’ll see that I’m in you.
Don’t believe in everything
you hear.
Don’t believe in everything
you see.
Watch all the hate just
disappear,
when you stand
beside me.
We’ve got a magic mirror,
we use it everyday.
It makes it all much clearer,
it helps us find our way.
We’ve got a magic mirror,
you can use it too,
when you look at us
you’ll see that we’re in you.
Learn to be a person
who can see.
Learn to be a person
who can trust.
You create a new reality,
when you stand beside us.
We’ve got a magic mirror,
we keep it in our hearts.
It brings us all much nearer.
No one is apart.
We’ve got a magic mirror,
you can use it too.
When you look within
you’ll see the real you.
When you look at us
you’ll see that we’re in you.

Mean Girls
02:54
|
|||
Having a party on late Saturday
you’re not invited
sorry to say.
Plenty of room
gonna have fun,
too bad in a way
that you can’t come.
I’m a mean girl, mean girl
I don’t know why,
I am not happy but
I never cry.
I‘m a mean girl, mean girl
it’s so much fun,
every day you get
to be number one!
You be my friend,
come sit with me.
We’ll be the coolest
fish in the sea.
Don’t talk to them.
Don’t even smile.
They are no one
but we have the style.
We’re the mean girls, mean girls
We don’t know why,
we are not happy
but we never cry.
We’re the mean girls, mean girls
It’s so much fun
Every day you get
to be number one!I don’t agree .
I don’t go along.
I know what’s right
and I know what’s wrong.
Be kind to all,
see everyone .
We are all cool
when we are all one.
We’re not mean girls, really
we are just sad.
We can do better
without acting bad.
We’re not mean girls, mean girls,
It’s just a mask
underneath are kind girls
growing real fast.
Come to the party
it will be fun
all are invited
bring everyone.
We’ll all be cool.
We’ll all be kind.
New world a coming.
New frame of mind.
No more mean girls.
No more mean girls.
No more mean girls.

Words, Words, Words
02:55
|
|||
You didn’t call me names.
You didn’t punch my arm.
You didn’t tell me lies,
but you really did me harm
‘cause when you talked about me,
out there is cyberspace,
you may as well have stood there
and punched me right in the face.
‘Cause words, words, words
wherever they’re found
they can lift you up
or throw you on the ground
so use your words wisely
and we can still hang around.
Our words are what connect us
wherever we are found.
You said you were so sorry,
you didn’t mean no harm,
it was all a stupid joke,
no cause for great alarm.
I told you I forgive you.
I really meant it too.
But old words can come to haunt us,
It’s time to try out something new.
So think before you speak.
Imagine they are you.
Remember all the words
that make you feel so blue.
Our words can be like wings
that lift hearts to the sky
don’t waste them on the things
that make an angel cry.
Boo hooooooooooo!
You friended me on Facebook.
You gave me a big hug.
We’re buddies now forever.
Sit with me on the rug,
but what about the new kid
who sits there all alone.
Let’s talk to her this morning
and make her feel right at home.
Cause, words, words, words
wherever they’re found
they can lift you up
or throw you on the ground
so use your words wisely
and we can still hang around.
Our words are what connect us
wherever we are found.
Our words are what connect us
wherever we are found.

Sammy Miller
05:07
|
|||
Sammy Miller
Sammy Miller sat on me
back in 1963
when I made fun
of his funny shirt.
Why I said it
I don’t know.
It was mean.
It was low.
I watched his teardrops
fall into the dirt.
Words live on as echoes
inside a heart and mind.
Pain and kindness tumble
through the years.
Your story changes me.
My story changes you.
Let words of love
echo through our tears.
I’m not sure why
we picked on him
perhaps it was
his goofy grin
or the way
his hair looked in the rain.
He had a pointy
little nose.
He didn't wear
the normal clothes.
But we were wrong
to call him unkind names.
Words live on as echoes
inside a heart and mind.
Pain and kindness tumble
through the years.
Your story changes me.
My story changes you.
Let words of love
echo through our tears.
I saw him last week
on Facebook.
He still had
that haunted look.
40 years.
He had 13 friends.
I could see it
in his eyes
that he still
believed our lies.
When does a bully’s taunting
ever end?
Words live on as echoes
inside a heart and mind.
Pain and kindness tumble
through the years.
Your story changes me.
My story changes you.
Let words of love
echo through our tears.
When I look back
I'm so ashamed
of what I said.
I take the blame.
I wish I could
have been a better me
I’m kinder now.
I realize
my words live on
in others’ eyes.
I’m not the me
I was in ’63.
Words live on as echoes
inside a heart and mind.
Pain and kindness tumble
through the years.
Your story changes me.
My story changes you.
Let words of love
echo through our tears.
Words change
you --
you’re changing me.
Echo love.
Words change
me --
I’m changing you.
Echo love.

Xenophobia (a poem)
01:25
|
|||
Xenophobia
If you had xenophilia
and I had xenophobia
and we were from two cultures
far apart as night and day
then I would want to run from you
and you would want to run to me
and I would cry to look at you
and you would want to play.
Everything would frighten me.
Your different skin.
Your different prayer.
You would find me beautiful.
You’d reach your hand.
You’d try to share.
And I would hide inside my fears.
And I would tremble in my tears.
Such loneliness might last for years.
But you would still be there.
And one day I would look at you.
Your different prayer.
Your different skin.
I’d see your hand extended
and I’d know that we were kin.
I’d know you waited for me
with a love I did not earn.
It might take me a while
but eventually
I’d learn.

Afraid of Love
02:47
|
|||
Afraid of love,
in love with fear,
sad hearts live alone
in stony towers,
but love shines on
through all the years
one by one
the hearts
they start to flower.
His name was Xenophobia
He lived north of Morovia,
he was afraid of
everyone in town. Her name was Xenophilia
she worked in memorabilia,
she smiled and laughed
at everyone around.
Afraid of love,
in love with fear,
sad hearts live alone
in stony towers,
but love shines on
through all the years
one by one
the hearts
they start to flower.
He met her at the grocery store,
standing by the freezer door,
He didn’t like the way she smiled at him.
He tried to look away from her,
Then everything became a blur,
he couldn’t be the person he had been.
Afraid of love,
In love with fear,
sad hearts live alone
In stony towers,
but love shines on
through all the years
one by one
the hearts
they start to flower.Darkness always shatters with the light.
Day will always cover up the night.
Hope will always drown out all sad.
Good will always swallow up the bad.
They married in the marketplace
and gave hope to the human race
some people laughed,
and other people cried.
It’s hard to know just what to say,
when all the hate has gone away,
and this new love
will never be denied.
Darkness always shatters with the light.
Day will always cover up the night.
Hope will always drown out all sad.
Good will always swallow up the bad.
Afraid of love,
in love with fear,
sad hearts live alone
in stony towers,
but love shines on,
through all the years,
One by one
the hearts
they start to flower.
One by one
the hearts
they start to flower.
One by one
the hearts
they start to flower.

Now is the New Day
02:02
|
|||
No more worries,
no more fears,
something new between the ears.
When someone hits you turn your cheek
you own the world when you are meek,
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Don’t judge me by my skin.
Take the time to look within.
The train of truth is on the track
when no one talks behind your back. Cause,
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Man and woman both are wings.
The bird it soars, the bird it sings.
Much more love and much less hate.
Watch the world cooperate, cause,Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
We are the mixed fruit
of one tree.
Live in peace and unity.
Forget the old,
embrace the new,
less me, me, me,
more you, you, you.
For,
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day
Now is the new day.
People hungry,
People scared,
They don’t know
how much we care.
Face the sun,
soak up its rays.
It’s time to find a better way.
Cause,
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.
Now is the new day.

Barry Lane Vermont
I write songs about kindness for children and songs about hope and justice for
adults.
I love Pete Seeger, and believe, as he did, that a single song can help change the world by uniting hearts and minds.
We are the mixed fruit of one tree,
Live in peace and unity.
Forget the old
embrace the new,
Less me, me, me,
more
You, you, you.
For now is the New Day.
